Two backstabbing deserters steal a Gatling Gun from their cavalry unit to attack an Apache tribe and steal their gold. They get help from a naive pacifist pastor. Meanwhile, both the cavalry and the Apache go after them - and the Gun.
Low-budget, by-the-numbers western, routine in every department: writing, direction, acting, you name it. The plot is nothing special: a ragtag detachment of soldiers must protect a new Gatling gun from falling into the hands of rampaging Indians. A somewhat decent cast gives this picture a bit more than just a passing interest, but not much more. Phil Harris looks out of place, John Carradine was at a point in his career where he took just about anything and everything that was offered to him--which explains why he's in this--Guy Stockwell looks tired, and the only even remotely energetic performance is given by veteran western actor and John Ford favorite Woody Strode. Listlessly directed and sloppily written, this cheap-looking film has a burst of action near the end that breaks the monotony, but not enough to make it worth sitting through. Skip it.
I couldn't get into this one. A cavalry patrol recaptures a stolen Gatling Gun, and must escort it (and the gun thieves) back to a safe location through hostile Apache territory. I noted the anti nuclear weapons subliminal message discussed early on in the movie's dialog. One scene I found baffling involved a pacifist preacher, who knew the hostile Apache chief, Two Knifes, coming out of a homestead while being restrained by the homestead family and the Cavalry patrol commander, yelling for Two Knives that his friend the preacher was in the homestead. Out of nowhere arrows hit the pacifist preacher, yet for some reason do not hit the cavalry commander and the other combatants....lack of realism. There are corny old school cinematic (what you see in black and white films) romantic subplots...I do not understand how one of the females who was part of this cavalry / civilian group, and involved in the corny romance sub plots, was able to untie one of the gun thieves being escorted in order to have their corny face touching moments...no one was watching the prisoner? Why didn't these people steal one of the horses and run, especially if the gun thief knew he was probably going to be executed anyway? I could not watch this film any longer, I had to end it there. A red attaché case is being transported by a chain of enemy agents though the avengers are unsure of its contents and its ultimate recipient - believed to be a traitor in the government who will receive a large pay-out on delivery. Having beaten the couriers and obtained the object in question Steed and Miss King must use their musical skills to - literally - crack the case.
Steed and Tara follow a chain of couriers passing a sophisticated briefcase that's carrying a large payoff for an unidentified traitor within the government.
There is a high level traitor operating within the ministry and the only way to identify him is to follow a mysterious red case through a chain of contacts. The case can't be opened by anybody but its final recipient or it will explode and each member of the chain must follow precise instructions from a recording within the case which is activated by their own key. The keys themselves vary; most are regular keys but there are also vocal and musical keys required to get it to deliver its message. Steed and Tara manage to intercept the case and follow the chain; each time they meet the next contact they must either acquire the key or trick the contact into giving the necessary details. The contacts are quite varied; a young girl at a ballet school, a karate instructor and a musician to mention just three.

This episode is based on a fairly simple idea but it works perfectly; the talking case is an imaginative idea and the chain of couriers is interestingly varied. Each of the links led to an enjoyable meeting with the next contact; the most fun being the young girl who extorted a bribe from Steed and Tara's fight with the karate instructor. There were plenty of exciting moments along the way and for once the bad guy nearly gets away with it but ultimately slips up in a rather simple way which I won't spoil here. The cast, both regulars and guest stars perform well in an episode which is classic Avengers in style without some of the more silly elements of many episodes.
"Take Me to Your Leader" is another Robert Fuest feast for the eyes, from an intriguing script by Terry Nation. Steed and Tara trail an impregnable briefcase from one courier to the next, and hope to catch the big cheese at the conclusion of its journey, with Mother the prime suspect. The veteran cast includes Patrick Barr, John Ronane ("Murdersville"), Michael Robbins ("Square Root of Evil," "Dragonsfield," "Mr Teddy Bear"), Penelope Keith ("The Murder Market" and "Something Nasty in the Nursery"), Michael Hawkins ("The Deadly Air" and "The Golden Fleece"), and Raymond Adamson ("The Decapod" and "The Grandeur That Was Rome").
